Familiar

They're family. Their medicine should be familiar.

Familiar translates proven human medicines into novel therapeutics and companion diagnostics for the animals who share our lives — designed to reach every pet, through every veterinary clinic.

The opportunity

Our pets get the same diseases we do. They deserve the same breakthroughs.

Pets develop many of the same cancers, autoimmune conditions, and metabolic diseases that affect people — driven by the same underlying biology. Human medicine has entered a golden age: the FDA approved 50 novel drugs for humans in 2024 alone. However for companion animals, that number is fewer than 5 per year.

The science exists. The targets are validated, the mechanisms proven. What's been missing is a company built to do the translational work — bridging cross-species biology, navigating veterinary regulatory pathways, and delivering medicines where they're needed. Familiar is that company.

Our approach

Modern medicines for pets we love.

Familiar takes proven human drug candidates — small molecules with validated targets and established safety data — and translates them into novel therapeutics for companion animals. Small molecules enable the widest access: scalable, manufacturable, and deliverable through every veterinary clinic, not just specialty centers.

Novel Therapeutics

Small molecules, translated from human medicine.

A proprietary pipeline targeting the indications where human science is furthest ahead and veterinary need is greatest. Every program starts with published, peer-reviewed human data and advances only when the cross-species work confirms it should.

Companion Diagnostics

Identifying the patients who benefit most.

Point-of-care diagnostics designed to pair with the therapies veterinarians prescribe. From identifying the patients most likely to benefit from treatment to monitoring response, our diagnostics close the loop between detection and care.

And because the biology is shared, the science flows both ways.

Dogs and cats develop these diseases naturally  — making companion animal clinical programs a powerful source of early efficacy signal for human drug development. Familiar's work doesn't just bring modern medicines to the pets who need them. It generates evidence in native disease populations that helps pharma partners de-risk their own programs, faster and more efficiently than traditional preclinical models.

Our origin

It began with one dog.

When our co-founder Elizabeth's dog, Lily, was diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor, she knew exactly what modern oncology had made possible — and experienced firsthand how little of that science had yet reached veterinary medicine. Together with her long-time collaborator, she founded Familiar to change that.
